An autopsy determined the death of a 72-year-old Harris County Jail inmate earlier this year was a homicide, officials said Saturday. According to the Harris County Institute of Forensic Science, Norman Ford Hicks Sr. died Jan. 22 from complications of a heart attack after suffering blunt head trauma and a broken nose.

He was a paranoid schizophrenic, officials said.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office investigation is ongoing and the district attorney's office is also investigating the circumstances surrounding Hicks' death.

An HCSO spokesperson Saturday explained that Hicks' death may not be a murder just because it was ruled a homicide.

A ruling of homicide means the death was not a result of natural causes, an accident or suicide.

HCSO officials said they will present their findings when their investigation is complete.
