Check in lately? Foursquare revamps app

Foursquare, the smart phone service that lets people "check in" to restaurants, bars and wherever else they might find themselves, is launching a new version of its application that plays up serendipity and the discovery of new places. The updated app will include a new button, "explore," which replaces the current "tips" section. Co-founder Dennis Crowley says the idea is to find things near you, including the unexpected. So Foursquare might recommend a new burrito joint based on your check-in history, or what your friends like.

The latest version of Foursquare will be available for iPhones and Android phones Wednesday. It will also offer new types of incentives, or "specials." There's also updated leaderboard that lets users compete against each other by scoring points for check-ins.
