Man shot by officers on Houston's north side

HOUSTON The incident happened around 7:30pm in the 3800 block of Jensen and Calvalcade. Houston police say officers on patrol almost hit a male in his 20s on a bike. He was riding his bicycle on the wrong side of the road without a headlamp. They circled back around to talk to the man and asked him to stop.

The man stopped, but put his hands in his pocket. He removed his hands when officers ordered him to do so. Then officers began patting him down, at which point, he again reached into his pocket and pulled out a gun.

"At some point during the struggle, he turns it towards one of the officers and obviously believing they are both about to be shot, one of the officers discharges his duty weapon," said Victor Senties with the Houston Police Department.

Police say the officer shot the man once in the head. He was transported to the hospital and was pronounced dead on arrival. The man has been identified as David Dwayne Butler, 26.

The officers were not injured.
