The ongoing drought prompted the governor to declare most of the state a disaster area.

Gov. Rick Perry issued a disaster declaration for 244 of the 254 counties saying the counties face an extreme fire hazard.

The governor's office said a lack of rain dried grass and other vegetation across the state and poses a significant fire danger.

The declaration order authorizes all necessary public and private measures to meet the fire threat.
