According to police, Jamal Jones, 24, was visiting his girlfriend at her parents' apartment at 12500 Dunlap. Police say Jones, a commissioned security guard, was armed with his duty weapon and was in the home with his girlfriend, as well as his four-month-old child, his girlfriend's sister, Felicia Jefferson, 28, and Jefferson's two children, ages 3 and 7.
Investigators say Jones, believing the gun was not loaded, was waving it in the direction of those in a bedroom of the home. The pistol discharged and Jefferson was struck in the head. She died at the scene.
Jones, 24, is charged with criminal negligent homicide. No one else was injured in the shooting.
