HPD officer fatally shoots female robbery suspect

HOUSTON It started around 1am. According to Houston police, a man was returning to his home near Beechnut and Jorine when we was approached by two suspects he says stole his wallet, laptop and cell phone.

After the robbery, the victim followed the suspects about a mile away to The Mills Apartments off Bissonnet near Forum Park without them knowing. He called police from a nearby Raceway gas station.

Police arrived and followed the robbery victim to the apartments, where he identified the white Dodge Neon he says was involved.

The officer, Officer D. Hoang, says he when got out of his vehicle to approach, he saw a woman.

"At that time, he sees a female suspect near the vehicle armed with a gun," said John Cannon with the Houston Police Department. "He orders the female to drop the weapon and show her hands. Instead the female walks by the officer from a close distance, points the gun at him and that's when he discharged his weapon one time, striking the suspect."

The female suspect was killed.

There was a man who was with her. He tried to get away over a fence, but was caught. After being taken into custody, he said he had nothing to do with the suspected robbery, that he just lives at the complex. He was taken downtown for questioning.

Police say there was stolen evidence found inside the Dodge Neon, a vehicle that was also stolen.

The woman's identity hasn't yet been released. Officer Hoang is a nine-year veteran with HPD.
