Plano ISD ends plan to ban textbook
PLANO, TX
A spokeswoman with the Plano school district in suburban Dallas
said Monday that teachers can continue to use the humanities
textbook. Spokeswoman Lesley Range-Stanton told The Dallas Morning
News that the district's curriculum department had initially
decided to replace the book "after a parent brought an issue to
the staff's attention."
The book -- "Culture and Values: A Survey of the Humanities,
Alternate Volume" -- contains photos of nude statues from ancient
Egypt, Greece and Rome, as well as the Italian Renaissance.
The decision prompted complaints from students and parents that
the district was censoring legitimate academic material.
