Area sex offender on state's most wanted caught

HOUSTON Bruce McCain, 51, turned himself into authorities in the Valley on Tuesday, and McAllen police transported him to the Hidalgo County jail. He will eventually be transported back to Harris County, where he faces a felony violating civil commitment charge and parole violation.

McCain was originally sentenced for two sexual assaults in Nueces County in 1986. He was paroled in May and placed on electronic monitoring. But on October 1, McCain escaped from a northeast Houston halfway house in the Loop 610/Beaumont Highway area.

A few days later, McCain was added to the DPS 10 Most Wanted Sex Offender list and a reward was offered for his capture. DPS has yet to replace him with another wanted suspect.

DPS, the U.S. Marshal's Service, the Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force, the Texas Attorney General's Office, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, and local authorities had been searching for him since his escape.

Most Wanted Sex Offenders are considered dangerous and the public should not try to apprehend these criminals. Anyone with information on these offenders can provide anonymous by calling the Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-252-8477, texting the letters "DPS"—followed by your tip—to 274637 (CRIMES) from your cell phone or submit a tip through the DPS website.
