Texas Southern takes care of Alabama State

The Tigers (2-3, 2-1 Southwestern Athletic Conference) came in allowing opponents just 123.5 yards passing per game and held the Hornets (3-2, 3-2) to 149 yards, 57 on the ground. Alabama State got 67 of its 92 yards passing on one play, a 67-yard touchdown pass from Rashar Burkette to Nick Andrews.

Martin Gilbert scored on a 12-yard run in the first quarter for Texas Southern and coach Johnnie Cole, who was offensive coordinator at Alabama State from 2000 to 2002.

Arvell Nelson put the Tigers ahead 14-7 with a 1-yard run with 7:12 to play, and Thomas' interception return came on the first play after the ensuing kickoff with 6:49 left.
