Three of the candidates to be the next governor of Texas were in Houston to talk about education.

Democrat Bill White, Libertarian Kathie Glass and Green Party Candidate Deb Shafto participated in the debate, which focused on education topics.

A few hundred people listened to the debate at the Harris County Department of Education in north Houston. Eyewitness News Anchor Melanie Lawson served as moderator.

Governor Rick Perry was invited to the debate, but he declined to attend.

The Republican had said he would not agree to a debate unless White released tax returns for all his years in public service, including the years before he was mayor of Houston.
