Governor may offer plan for controversial Islamic center

NEW YORK Last week, Gov. David Paterson suggested that the state might be able to swap some public property for the building two blocks from the World Trade Center site where the facility is planned.

Paterson expects to meet soon with planners of the Islamic cultural center and mosque in lower Manhattan, but nothing's been scheduled yet.

A Paterson aide says there have been discussions only at the staff level.

A spokesman for the cultural center project says the governor's interest is appreciated.
