Suspected robber leads police on wild chase

HOUSTON Around 9:30pm, police were called out to a burglary on the North Freeway. When officers arrived on the scene, they found a truck that had crashed into the side of a building. They say two men jumped out of the truck. One ran away, but the other took off and somehow got into a police officer's cruiser and took off.

Authorities used the GPS in the squad car to track the suspect down. They caught up with him at the Laura Koppe exit ramp. In the process, the suspect had crashed into the back of a pickup that was carrying a family of six.

A grandmother inside the pickup was taken to the hospital with a head injury. The injuries she sustained are not believed to be life-threatening.

One of the children inside that truck described how it all happened.

"It hit us twice. We tried to get out the way. We tried to swerve and he swerved into our side and hit us twice," said witness Cesar Barrera. "We thought it was a police car, so we just tried to move away. And later on we found out that it was a stolen police car."

Authorities identified the suspect as 18-year-old Jimmy Trailer. He will be charged with evading arrest and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
