Condemned inmate gets life over killing

DALLAS, TX John Wade Adams was sentenced Monday, a day after Judge Gracie Lewis declared a mistrial in the 47-year-old's penalty phase after jurors deliberated 27 hours on whether he should remain on death row over the slaying of Donna Vick of DeSoto.

A federal court last year granted a new sentencing hearing to Adams, convicted of capital murder in 1998.

Vick had helped Adams and fellow transient Gregory Wright, who was executed in 2008 in the case.

A prosecutor objected to the jury dismissal because the foreman hadn't indicated they were deadlocked.

Upon hearing he'd be granted life in prison, Adams told Vick's family members: "I won."
