Harris County is now a step closer to getting a public defender's office. Yesterday, county commissioners approved a revised $4.1 million state grant application. The revised plan for a hybrid defender system will include a mix of private lawyers appointed by judges and attorneys working for the public defender's office.

If the grant is approved by the state, the system could begin in Harris County by early next year.
