University Interscholastic League again considers adding 6A

SAN ANTONIO, TX

UIL Executive Director Charles Breithaupt (BRYTE'-howpt) said Monday "it's more likely now than ever" that the 1,200 high schools playing football in Texas might be realigned into six classes of roughly an equal number of schools.

Under the proposal, four schools from every district in every classification would make the state football playoffs. Class 5A and 4A districts are currently the only ones to advance four teams from each district.

Breithaupt said the proposal is one of several that school districts will be surveyed about this fall. He said six-class plan differs from previous calls to create a "superconference" of the 100 or so biggest high schools in the state.
