Robber foiled by hungry off-duty cop

Scissors cut paper. Paper covers rock. Gun trumps chain. And that meant the end game for a chain-swinging, would-be robber at a San Diego KFC restaurant. Witnesses say the man barged in Saturday, smashed a heavy chain on the counter and ordered the employees into the kitchen. But before he could get the cash register opened, the sergeant pointed his gun at the man and told him to hit the floor.

As if the gun wasn't enough to end the robbery, witnesses say the suspect demanded to see the officer's badge. The sergeant did -- and the man was taken into custody.

Matthew Vough, 46, was taken in for attempted armed robbery.
