Wrong way driver killed in collision on exit ramp

HOUSTON Houston police are investigating a fatal traffic accident in the 2300 block of the Gulf Freeway about 3am. The male victim, age unknown, was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity hasn't been released.

Witnesses reported a white Honda Civic driving the wrong way on the freeway in the area of the Gulf Freeway near the Highway 59 split. Authorities say the driver of the Honda was traveling northbound on the southbound lanes of the Gulf Freeway near Pierce, when his vehicle struck a red Chevrolet Blazer traveling northbound on the exit ramp to Highway 288/Southwest Freeway.

The driver of the Honda was killed on impact. The driver of the Blazer and his passenger were transported to Ben Taub General Hospital with minor injuries.

The accident shut down the Gulf Freeway northbound lanes for several hours during rush hour. An investigation is underway.
