What started as a typical day of running errands for McGaw and her family suddenly took an unexpected turn when they drove past a group of police cars with their lights flashing. Her mother-in-law, who was in the back seat with McGaw's two children, had a bad feeling.
"I said, 'Oh my God, we better get out of here you know.' We're passing by and then boom," said Arwen's mother-in-law, Hermie McGaw.
Hermie had no idea authorities were in the midst of a shootout with couple of suspected bank robbers and was unaware that her daughter-in-law who was driving had been struck by a stray bullet.
"Arwen said, 'Oh, I think I got shot.' I said, 'Are you sure? Are you sure?'" said Hermie.
The bullet hit McGaw in the pelvis. Her sister-in-law, Annabelle, who was sitting in the passenger's seat, was unharmed. Even though McGaw had been shot, she was able to pull over to the side of the road and call 911.
"She said, 'Oh my God, I hope the ambulance gets here quick. I feel hot. I feel dizzy,'" said Hermie.
The ambulance would arrive about five minutes later. But before it did, John Francis tried to help because he thought the family had car trouble.
"I was praying for her and telling her Jesus was here and that everything would be OK," he said.
By now, McGaw's sons, ages 11 and 8, were crying as they realized their mother was in agony.
We told Hermie McGaw that authorities arrested one suspect and shot and killed the other. She did not mince words.
"They deserve it. They deserve it," she replied.
Arwen McGaw's husband is a contractor with Flour Daniel and left for Afghanistan last Tuesday. No one in the family has been able to get a hold of him.
