One little number makes a big difference

NEW ALBANY, IN The callers were trying to reach the Floyd County Treasurer's Office, but got Carolyn and Donald Baxley. The Baxleys have a telephone number just one digit off from the treasurer's office.

A contractor sent out 2,000 notices telling property owners they have until June 1 to pay late tax bills or lose their property. It mistakenly directs them to call Baxleys' home telephone number, where the phones have been ringing incessantly since late last week.

Carolyn Baxley says her husband and daughter have helped answer calls and give out the correct number.

The 72-year-old retired nursing home worker says she's "talked to some really nice people and had a lot of laughs."
