Sheriff candidates draw cards for GOP nod

BRIDGEPORT, NE Milo Cardenas' nine of hearts Monday night beat Travis Petersen's six of spades and handed Cardenas a Republican primary win.

The two men agreed to cut a deck of cards after Monday's re-count confirmed that both finished with 379 votes after balloting ended last Tuesday. State law requires such electoral ties be settled by a game of chance.

Morrill County Clerk Kathy Brandt shuffled the deck seven times before the candidates drew cards.

No Democrat ran for sheriff so Cardenas is almost certain to win the job in November's election.
