On the road to recovery, Galveston says a surge in applications to repair home damage proves the island needs more funding to rebuild after Hurricane Ike. The city has received 1,500 applications for a voluntary program to repair and rebuild damaged homes. Galveston housing officials estimated they would receive 1,100 applications by this time.

The city says the $104 million in federal funding that's already been allocated isn't enough. Galveston is still accepting applications for the program.
