Woman dies in massive fire near Pearland

PEARLAND, TX The fire started early this morning on Harkey Road near Bailey Road in an unincorporated area of Brazoria County. The mobile home that burned has been built onto over the years.

The area, like most most unincorporated areas, do not have fire hydrants. Firefighters had to use tanker trucks full of water to put out the flames.

Neighbors were concerned about the welfare of Ruth Lees, 79, who had limited mobility, occasionally getting around on a scooter.

"The sirens started are going off around 4:30am to 5am. I went outside and got my grandma," said neighbor Dominique Shelton. "She was like a really old lady and we barely saw her, so she may have been in the house."

After the fire was extinguished, officials discovered Lees' body in the back of the home.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
