Round-up to target people with outstanding warrants

The City of Houston's Police Department will be among more than 300 law enforcement jurisdictions across Texas participating in the "2010 Great Texas Warrant Round-Up", which officially begins Saturday, March 6. HPD and the Harris County Constables will join nearly 70 other regional participants in this statewide annual event targeting people who have outstanding warrants with their respective Municipal Courts.

The City of Houston Municipal Courts alone has thousands of active warrants it is seeking to clear. Municipal Court officials are encouraging defendants to take advantage of one of the options available to settle outstanding warrants. However, no amnesty is being offered in conjunction with the round-up effort.

"We offered an Amnesty last spring which some defendants took advantage of and paid out their cases, yet many others did not, and as a result, still have active cases that can cause them to be arrested," said Presiding Judge Berta Mejia.

Once the warrant period begins on March 6, HPD officers will aggressively target those persons on the warrant list and arrests can take place at any location, including the defendant's home, school or workplace.

Director and Chief Clerk Sahira Abdool emphasized, "We are notifying all defendants that there are numerous options available to assist them in quickly and conveniently taking care of their outstanding warrants."

Notices are being mailed to all defendants with active warrants pending against them. For more information about warrants or citations and for a complete list of Houston's Regional Partners visit the website at or contact City's Helpline at 311 or 713-837-0311 if outside the City of Houston.
