A motorist struck a pair of horses in east Houston, killing one of the animals. Around 6:30am, the Harris County Sheriff's Department says a motorist struck two horses that were loose on the ramp from the East Sam Houston Parkway to I-10 westbound. One of the horses died as a result of the accident and the other was injured.

According to the sheriff's department, the horses got out because someone cut the lock on the gate to their enclosure. Authorities don't know yet if it was an act of criminal mischief or an attempted burglary.

The driver of the pickup that hit the horses was not injured.
