Crime Stoppers wants you to report celebratory gunfire

HOUSTON Crime Stoppers held its seventh annual anti-celebratory gunfire news conference Monday. Police urge Houstonians to call Crime Stoppers if they hear or see anyone firing off guns in the air on New Years Eve.

"This is unacceptable behavior on new year's, that we're here to protect our citizens and our community and be good citizens and good neighbors," said Houston City Council Member-Elect Brenda Stardig. "I think that it's very important that if you know of someone that is discharging a firearm to call Crime Stoppers if you're not comfortable calling the police."

Firing a gun in the air is a Class A misdemeanor which carries a punishment of up to a year in prison and $4,000 fine.
