Man charged with murder for 1980 case

HOUSTON According to the Harris County Sheriff's Department, on March 26, 1980, the victim, Wilmer Joe Nichols, was at the Maverick Club in east Harris County. The club was located at 15839 Market Street.

According to employees, Mr. Nichols had what appeared to be a large sum of cash and was "flashing" it. The defendant, Glen Clary, reportedly befriended Nichols and the two played pool before leaving together.

Nichols was found dead a short time later at 19300 Wallisville Road. He had sustained a gunshot wound to the head. At the time, no suspects were identified and the case went unsolved.

In March 2009, the HCSO's revitalized Cold Case Squad reopened the case and began investigating. Detectives located several individuals who had credible information and knowledge about the case.

Probable cause for a criminal charge was established and on Oct. 20, 2009 the charge of murder was filed against Glen Clary. That same day, Clary was arrested on the charge in Sabine Parrish, Louisiana. He posted bond and fought extradition.

On December 14, 2009, Clary voluntarily surrendered to the Harris County Sheriff's Office. He is currently at the Harris County Jail charged with murder.

Clary has a criminal history dating to the 1960's that includes arrests in Texas, Georgia, Louisiana and Florida.
