A federal judge has sentenced a couple who were members of a smuggling ring that moved thousands of illegal immigrants through South Texas to Houston and laundered $1.7 million. Federal prosecutors say 28-year-old Nazareth Rodriguez-Alamo and his 32-year-old common-law wife Leticia Garcia ran the operation and collected the money.

Officials say Rodriguez-Alamo is a Mexican citizen illegally in the U.S.

U.S. District Judge Randy Crane sentenced him to more than four years in prison.

Garcia is a legal resident from Mexico. She was sentenced to two years in prison Wednesday.

Several others who worked as scouts for the smuggling business were also sentenced.
