Texans LB Cushing wins defensive award

HOUSTON [SPORTS BLOG: Read the latest from the Eyewitness Sports team]

It's the second award this season for Cushing after he won defensive honors in Week 6. He becomes the first Texans rookie to earn the award twice in one season. Wide receiver Jacoby Jones is the only other Texans player to win it twice in the same season. Jones accomplished the feat last year, also in Weeks 6 and 8.

On Sunday, Cushing led the Texans with 10 tackles, had his first career full sack, and an interception in the team's 31-10 win over the Buffalo Bills. His interception came helped clinch the victory with under two minutes left when he tipped a pass and hauled in the deflection.

Cushing secured the fourth AFC Player of the Week honor for the Texans in 2009. Jones won the Special Teams award in Week 4 and QB Matt Schaub took home Offensive Player of the Week honors in Week 2.

A Texans player has won an AFC award following four of the team's five wins this year. Houston's four awards in 2009 matches the team record set last season.
