Rapist attacks 9 women in 3 counties

HOUSTON Some Centerville residents are on the lookout for a man who is attacking and raping elderly women in the middle of the night. The attacker has struck three times in Leon County, and twice in Lavaca, Bell and Falls counties.

The man tried to add another victim to his spree on Saturday, police said. He broke into a home and tried to attack an 88-year-old woman. She woke up, confronted him and chased him outside with a handgun.

"She went into the survival mode -- right off," said Leon County Sheriff Jerry Wakefield. "She came up out of bed, and that's probably what saved her."

So far, police have hit a dead-end trying to get a description of the man.

"No description at all of the suspect," Wakefield said.

They do know he confronts the victims while they are asleep -- between 4-6am -- after cutting the phone lines outside the victim's home.

The victims are all women between the ages of 75 and 95.

Monday night in Centerville, the Leon County Sheriff's Office will hold a public meeting to talk about the attacks.
