Friends, family of murder victim hold benefit

HOUSTON Luis 'Byrd' Mendez was shot and killed at an apartment complex in southwest Houston earlier this month. His fiancé says Mendez was trying to defend her from four robbers. No arrests have been made.

Yesterday, relatives held a barbecue to raise money and add it to the current reward.

"Our only reason for doing this is so these people don't hurt somebody else's kid and cause other parents the pain that we're going through," said the victim's father, Mariano Mendez.
