SWAT standoff ends with arrest

SUGAR LAND, TX Authorities say Anthony Gilbert, 37, not only stabbed his one-week-old son, but he's also accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a student.

The more we dug, the more we found on Gilbert. We first reported that he is a teacher at Terry High and it seems it may have been where his troubles began.

"Honestly, I think it's horrible," said parent Hillary Marek.

Outside Terry High School Friday night, word of the teacher's arrest overshadowed the volleyball game inside.

"I was actually shocked. Really had no clue something like this would happen at Terry. I didn't think there were that many teachers like that," said former Terry student Brianne Ramos.

Police say Gilbert, who's been an English teacher at the school just since August, is being investigated for allegedly having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old girl from the school. Police say at least one of the encounters happened somewhere on campus.

"It's believed at this point there are several different times. There may be several different locations," said Lynn Munford of the Rosenberg Police Department.

It's not clear how long this alleged relationship may have lasted or if the girl is one of Gilbert's students.

The Lamar Consolidated Independent School District says it told Gilbert Thursday he was being placed on administrative leave while the allegation was investigated.

It's unclear if that's what might have led Gilbert to spiral out of control. Emergency crews carried him out of his Sugar Land apartment Friday morning. He had several self-inflicted stab wounds. That was after a three-hour standoff with police.

They descended upon the apartment after Gilbert's wife showed up at a Sugar Land hospital with their newborn baby, a badly injured one-week-old boy. She told authorities Gilbert stabbed the infant repeatedly in his neck and chest during an overnight ordeal at their apartment. Investigators say Gilbert held his family hostage. It's unclear how his wife got out with the baby.

At last check, the infant was listed in critical condition. Gilbert's condition is not known.

The standoff

An English teacher from Terry High School in Fort Bend County is now hospitalized following a standoff with police. He's accused of sexually assaulting a child, and of stabbing his newborn son.

All of this happened in just the past 24 hours and ended with a standoff with SWAT officers at his Sugar Land apartment.

There was a warrant out for the arrest of Anthony Gilbert, 37. Rosenberg police say he was accused of having an improper relationship with a 16-year-old female student at Terry High School. Whether that had anything to do with the incidents at his home, police aren't saying.

It was a dramatic end to what police are calling an unbelievable act.

"That any person could do that to their own child is just unconscionable," said Doug Adolph with the Sugar Land Police Department.

A man accused of stabbing his own newborn child was dragged out by SWAT team members after barricading himself in his apartment for hours. It's a scene neighbors were shocked to find happened just feet from their homes.

"It's Sugar Land," said neighbor James Stewart. "It's not one of those things that I'd really expect to be right next door to me, especially in an apartment like this. I'm stunned by it ."

Police first learned of the disturbing case after Gilbert's wife showed up to Sugar Land Methodist Hospital carrying her badly injured one-week-old son. The child, police say, had been stabbed numerous times to his neck and chest. The child's mother would tell officers that Gilbert had held her and her two children hostage in their apartment overnight. They're not sure how she got away.

Adolph said, "We do know that she left. We don't whether or not she escaped or whether or not her husband let her leave."

Police quickly descended on the apartment where they attempted to make contact with Gilbert, but they say he refused to answer. After three hours of failed negotiations, SWAT team members finally moved in.

"SWAT entered the apartment complex, deployed gas and found the suspect who had very serious self-inflicted stab wounds," Adolph said.

Neighbors we talked to say the couple seemed happy. Ganesh Bala, who lives just a couple of doors away from the couple, had just seen them two days ago.

"They were so happy," Bala said. "They were enjoying. I thought something that was a happy occasion was going on there, but now the situation is totally different."

Officials with Lamar Consolidated ISD confirm that Gilbert was placed on administrative leave. Authorities with Rosenberg police say the accusations were the teacher had sex with a student on campus.
