Witnesses describe fatal morning wreck

HOUSTON Authorities say the chase started when an officer was trying to pull over the driver on suspicion of driving under the influence near the Aldine-Bender area.

Police say the driver was trying to get away from officers and went through a red light. He wound up smashing the vehicle he was driving underneath a big rig carrying frozen chickens near Veterans Memorial and Antoine.

"Me and my mom were just shaking," witness Jordon Eberhardt said. "We were like, 'Oh my God. We hope everybody's alright.'"

Eberhardt and his mom stopped to get a breakfast sandwich at a Jack in the Box drive through when they witnessed what they call a nightmare.

"All you see is a car speeding up Veterans this way, and the cops coming up behind him," Tania Eberhardt said. "And then, I just, the crash."

The chase suspect was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital by Life Flight, where he later died. We're told that driver is 42 years old, but we don't yet know his identity. The big rig driver was not hurt.

All traffic restrictions put in place while the wreck was being investigated have been lifted, officers said.
