Stepmother takes stand in baby death trial

HOUSTON The trial has been going on for a little less than two weeks and Michelle Bearnth took the stand this morning. The courtroom was packed as Bearnth testified on the stand, trying to drive home the point that she did not kill her stepdaughter, Kylie Perkins.

Over the past few weeks, both prosecutors and the defense have presented a list of witnesses. At one point, prosecution even brought in a bathtub and a toilet seat in an effort to demonstrate how little Kylie could not have fallen as the defense contends.

The defense has maintained all along that this was an accident. On the stand today, Bearnth told members of the jury that she took Kylie to the hospital for pediatric checkups because she believed Kylie was having other health-related problems until this accident, she contends, actually occurred.

The prosecutors obviously say differently. They say Kylie suffered a number of bruises on her body that could not have come from an accident and therefore, they say Bearnth killed the girl.

Testimony is expected to continue throughout the day.
