Matthew Schmitt, 15, a sophomore at Seven Lakes High School who is also a band member, was riding in the back seat of a Mazda. Somehow the car lost control on Cinco Ranch Blvd. near Dear Meadow Falls, hit a curb and rolled over several times. Schmitt, who was wearing his seat belt, took a blow to the head and was killed.
Fellow students we talked to at the high school said they already heard the news by text.
"It says, 'Please pray for the families of the six people from Seven Lakes that were in the accident.' I was in band last year. I barely got the news, like maybe 20 minutes ago. All the band members care about each other. They're like a huge community and family," said Ryan Gonzalez, a Seven Lakes High School sophomore.
Five other people were in the car as well. They were uninjured as everyone was wearing their seatbelts.
We're also told a 15-year-old was driving the vehicle at the time. It's not clear right now if that teen was legally allowed to be behind the wheel. Authorities are not clear if speed was a factor in the accident.
A mother of a student at the school said that in honor of Schmitt, all the band members are immediately coming home, back to the high school after they performed at halftime of the school's football game.
