Galveston spokeswoman Alicia Cahill says some stretches of the boulevard were under 6 feet of water from Ike's storm surge, with unwelcome saltwater.
Cahill told the Galveston County Daily News that 510 dead or dying trees are scheduled for removal. Much of the wood will available to the public. Replanting is expected next fall.
Cahill says some of the wood is headed to Mystic, Conn., to help restore what's billed as the world's last wooden whaling ship. The Charles W. Morgan was built in 1841 in New Bedford, Mass.
