Man surrenders after hospital standoff

CHICAGO, IL Deputy police Chief Wayne Gulliford says the suspect was taken into custody after about seven hours of negotiations. Gulliford says no charges have been filed and the investigation continues.

Police say the man walked into the lobby of the Jesse Brown Veterans Administration Medical Center early Wednesday and fired one round before holing up in the emergency room. Nobody was hurt and the rest of the hospital remained open.

Gulliford isn't releasing the man's name and refused to comment on reports that he is a suspect in a homicide. In that case, police are investigating the deaths of a couple in their 70s who were found shot to death in their Chicago home.
