Arrest made in student hit and run accident

HOUSTON Three students were injured yesterday when a driver hit them at a bus stop on Mauna Loa at Prairie Wind in northwest Harris County.

Deputies say they have arrested Bob Nichols Norfleet, 34, a man they say has an extensive criminal history in Houston and Louisiana.

The accident happened Monday around 6:45am. Authorities say Norfleet passed a stopped school bus, pulling around the right side of it and plowed into the three students who were preparing to board the bus.

All three of the students were hurt, but deputies say Norfleet just kept driving. Moises Garcia, 16, had the worst of the injuries. Deputies say he went under Norfleet's car and was dragged 25 to 30 yards, breaking his leg, shoulder and elbow. A 15-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy who were also hospitalized have been released.

Deputies say they arrested Norfleet at about 3am today. They were able to identify him after recovering his girlfriend's car, the one they say was involved in the accident. Deputies say people spotted it at a nearby apartment complex with signs of damage and called it in.

Constable Ron Hickman says Norfleet has not expressed any kind of remorse for this.

"I don't think he really offered an excuse, I think the response I would say is probably more like a trapped animal. You know you're in trouble, but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do," said Constable Hickman.

Eyewitness News has learned that at the time of the accident, Norfleet was out on bond on a charge of DWI, and it wasn't his first. Deputies say they now plan on charging him with three felony counts of failure to stop and render aid. They are also investigating whether or not to charge others in this case.
