Two shot during altercation with officer

HOUSTON It happened about 1:30am on Doliver and Tanglewood in west Houston. Police say the officer was off duty working security in the Tanglewood subdivision. He was sitting in an unmarked city car when officers say four men passed by in a dark Escalade and slowed to a stop.

Police say two men got out with guns drawn, making demands and threats to the officer's life. Detectives believe the men were trying to carjack to officer or rob him. At some point, the confrontation escalated and shots were exchanged.

Authorities say both suspects were wounded and are now in the hospital. The officer was not hit by the gunfire, though his car was apparently struck several times.

Detectives believe the men may not have known who they were confronting.

"I don't believe that they knew he was an officer going into it, but once the door was opened and one of the subjects brandished the weapon in the matter that it was, it was very obvious that he was a Houston police officer in full uniform," said Detective Rick Moreno with the Houston Police Department.

Officers say they are actively searching for two men who got away in that dark Escalade.

The officer involved in this incident is a 29-year veteran of the Houston Police Department.
