Shooting incident shuts down Highway 249

HOUSTON The police investigation forced authorities to shut down all southbound lanes on Highway 249 at Bammel North Houston.

A Harris County sheriff's deputy was on patrol attempting to locate illegal drug activity around 3am. That's when the deputy observed what he believed to be a drug deal and started following a vehicle, eventually attempting to stop the vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle a maroon Chevy Impala fled southbound on State Highway 249, eventually stopping the vehicle and fleeing. The deputy returned to the area of the beginning of the pursuit and was advised there was a male who was dead in the southbound lanes of State Highway 249.

Sheriff's Homicide investigators were called to the scene and found 37-year-old John Froehlich may have been attempting to buy drugs from a black male and at some point an argument began. Froehlich attempted to leave and was shot by the other man.

Authorities say the black male suspect fled the scene in a green Chevrolet Camero, unknown year model. The incident is under investigation.
