Movie shoot shuts down Austin roads

AUSTIN, TX A stretch of Congress Avenue was closed to traffic Thursday as part of filming for the new Robert Rodriguez action movie "Machete," featuring Oscar winning actor Robert De Niro.

One scene included a red, white and blue-decorated stage with a banner saying "Vote for Senator McLaughlin." De Niro, wearing a suit, red tie and cowboy hat, was on stage and appearing to be giving a campaign speech.

Rodriguez previously announced the movie will also feature Jessica Alba, Lindsay Lohan and Cheech Marin, plus Danny Trejo, as a renegade former Mexican federal officer.

The film is based on the "fake" trailer in the 2007 movie "Grindhouse."

The Rodriguez "Spy Kids" movies and several of his other productions were filmed in Texas. His Troublemaker Studios is located in Austin.
