Chlorine spill forces evacuation at hotel

HOUSTON It happened around 2am at the hotel on Post Oak at West Alabama. A pool maintenance employee on the fifth floor apparently spilled some chlorine and got it wet, which sent strong fumes into the air.

The maintenance man got into the elevator to get help for himself. He and one other person were treated at the scene.

"They searched the fifth floor. If there'd been people on the fifth floor, they were probably removed then," said Houston Fire Department District Chief Tommy Dowdy. "They didn't find anybody else on the fifth floor. That was only floor they were going to evacuate because that was the heaviest fumes."

Dowdy says they pulled a second alarm because this is a hotel and they wanted to make sure they got the situation under control quickly.

Hotel patrons were not injured in the incident.
