Report: Texas jobless face dual battles

AUSTIN, TX The Houston Chronicle and the San Antonio Express-News report more than half a million people were getting unemployment benefits in June. The agency rejected 150,347 claims the first half of this year, before appeals.

Texas' tight list of eligibility standards is the most common reason for denials.

Commission spokeswoman Ann Hatchitt highlighted the percentage of claims that are approved, totaling 66.25 percent last year and 73 percent the first six months of this year.

Texas' AFL-CIO's Rick Levy says the state's unemployment system is based on a 40-year-old model, and a lot of people "fall through the cracks."
