One dead in officer-involved shooting

KINGWOOD, TX Police say the man attacked the officer as he was working an extra security job Saturday night at an apartment complex off Lake Hills at Big Springs in Kingwood.

Neighbors heard the commotion around 9 or 10pm Saturday night.

"Like four or five (gunshots) right in a row," said one neighbor. "You knew it was one gun. It wasn't two guns."

Police say an HPD officer who was working special duty at Woodland Hills Village Apartments heard an argument between a man and a woman. The officer approached and then there was a struggle.

"The suspect manages to get the officer's Taser out from his holster, points it at the officer, tells him, 'You're dead.'" said Victor Sentries of the Houston Police Department. "At that point, the officer, fearing for his safety, takes out his service weapon and fires."

The medical examiner identified the man the officer killed as 39-year-old John Barnes. Neighbors describe the Barnes they know as a good neighbor.

"We've never seen that side of him. We've never seen him raise his voice or in that kind of temperament. Never," said Reva Wofford.

She says the wrecker driver was always helpful, often playing with kids at the pool.

"It's a side that we've never seen, that we didn't think would ever happen," Wofford said.

The incident was unnerving for many who lived in the complex.

"I'm very concerned. I've got two kids and I'm a single woman, so that makes it even scarier," said another resident.

Police identify the officer who fired the shots as Officer Ryan Gardiner. He works out of Northeast Patrol Division and has been with HPD for seven years.

Gardiner will be on three days administrative duty during the investigation, which is routine when an officer fires a weapon.
