Frida Kahlo Festival held to celebrate her life

HOUSTON The triple digit temperatures didn't keep families away from the 3rd Frida Kahlo's Festival. Many came to check out Frida Kahlo artwork done by several local artists. It was held over the weekend at the East End Urban Market.

Artist, Lizbeth Ortiz told Eyewitness News that is was just three years ago that she invited friends and family over her place to celebrate Frida's birthday and her accomplishments and had a great turn out.

She decided to go bigger the following year with the help of friends and had over 500 people attend and this year was no exception. The expression of art wasn't limited to paintings. There was also jewelry, dance routines and fashion later in the evening.

The Aztec Dancers de Houston performed for the crowds. They even got the kids involved in the Circle of Friends dance.

The children who took part in the Summer Program at Talento Bilingue de Houston also performed a traditional Ballet Folklórico routine.

This year the event was held in collaboration with the Houston Institute for Culture.
