Catholics try to save Bolivar church

BOLIVAR, TX Seven protesters demonstrated outside Sacred Heart Church Wednesday morning where Cardinal Daniel DiNardo was scheduled to celebrate mass.

"We can restore our church. We have the money to do so. We are just asking that they allow us to do that," said protester Sandra Simmons.

The protesters from Bolivar want the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston to reverse its decision to tear down their church due to damage from Hurricane Ike. The archdiocese plans to consolidate parishes on Galveston Island and Bolivar Peninsula into one parish.

"We feel like the cardinal is not listening. We love our pope and we just want our church. We can fix it. We'll be there for mass," said another protester Mary Alice Luna.

The archdiocese has not returned out call for a comment.
