Galveston celebrates 'Juneteenth'

GALVESTON, TX The parade included marching bands, decorated cars, and horse drawn carriages from Galveston and across the state.

Juneteenth commemorates June 19th, 1865, the day Union General Gordon Granger read the Emancipation Proclamation in Galveston. The reading came two years after President Abraham Lincoln freed slaves and the news had finally reached Texas.
