A&M picks interim president

COLLEGE STATION, TX Bowen Loftin's appointment was announced Monday after the board of regents met in executive session. Loftin has been vice president and CEO at Texas A&M University at Galveston since 2005. His tenure included a tragic 2008, when Hurricane Ike struck Galveston a few months after a school sailboat accident killed one man.

The 49-year-old Murano resigned Sunday, less than two weeks after a scathing performance review that included low marks for leadership and management. She was the first Hispanic and first female president in the 132-year history of Texas A&M, which didn't admit women on an equal basis until 1971.

Texas A&M officials said they hope to have a permanent replacement within six months.
