Officer wins runoff election

HOUSTON People who live in the Heights and parts of northeast Houston cast their votes on Saturday to elect Houston Police Officer Ed Gonzalez. Gonzalez defeated former public high school teacher Maverick Welsh wtih 61 percent of the vote to Welsh's 39 percent.

Gonzalez and Welsh were battling for the seat that was vacated by Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia.
