When you shop for used gear, it's a good idea to stop in a few times, as the inventory changes often We found a $1,200 home gym at Pre-Owned Fitness. It would've cost $2,500 new. An Octane Fitness elliptical trainer is $1,700. New it would cost $3,000. And a Pacemaster treadmill that sells for $1,800 new is just $800 used.
Alyea explained, "The only difference between this 2007 model and the 2009 is the color."
The store honors the manufacturer's warranty, so if something does go wrong, you're not left hanging.
Over at Play It Again Sports you can not only pick up used equipment, you can unload your old stuff, even your children's used sports gear.
"Bring them to us," advised Logan Clarke of Play It Again Sports of Sugar Land. "It's cash. It's cash in your pocket. You walk out with a check."
If they decide to buy your equipment, there are three options -- consign it, trade it in or sell it for cash.
"You make the least if you take the cash and spend it somewhere else," Clarke said. "I give you 20% more if you spend it with me, and I'll give you more than that if you want to wait for it to sell and then I'll pay you."
Play It Again also sells new equipment, but by far the best deals here are on what's been used. You can save as much as 70% off new equipment prices.
Clarke said, "You don't have to have a $4,500 piece of equipment in your home to get a good workout."
There is a variety of price points. We found treadmills selling for $1,500, $500 and even $400. They also service everything they sell.
"We get the part, we come put the part in," Clarke said. "We fix it. We handle it."
