Arrest made in assault of mayor on scooter

CLEAR LAKE SHORES, TX When we caught up with League City Mayor Toni Randall, it was obvious she was still in quite a bit of pain.

"It's very scary," said Mayor Randall.

Police say she was traumatized by Denshay Benson, 17, who was arrested for assaulted the public figure.

"The speed limits 40 and he felt like she was going too slow," said Clear Lake Shores Police Department Chief Paul Shelley.

Police say it all happened Wednesday. The mayor was driving a scooter along FM 2094 when she claims Benson began to tail her, even trying to run her off the road. The two would follow each other into a parking lot, where authorities say things got physical.

"She was walking away. He pushed her and punched her in the back in her left side and knocked her to the ground," said Chief Shelley. "He got into his car and left."

Police say witnesses managed to get the license plate of Benson's car and on Friday, police took him into custody. Upon his arrest, cops say he wasn't very cooperative.

"Officers said once he saw them, he tried to run out the back door and the officer did catch him out the back door," said Chief Shelley.

Mayor Randall is known for riding her trademark scooter. She's often seen headed to meetings aboard the bike. Her friend who sold her the scooter was glad to hear an arrest was made.

"I don't know the whole situation, but that's not right in any situation," said friend Gary Gamble.

As for the mayor, she's not letting the incident stop her from continuing work, vowing that she'll be back on her trademark bike in the future.

"Real soon, hopefully on the weekend," she said. "It's going to be a beautiful weekend."

Benson is facing two charges -- assault causing body injury and deadly conduct. Both of these are Class A misdemeanors. Bond is set at $1,000 on each. If convicted, he could face up to a year in jail.
